The Rivers State Government has commenced a comprehensive reconstruction of the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Elekahia.
The initiative aims to revitalize the state’s flagship sports facility and enhance its capacity to host major sporting events.
The project is being executed by Monimichelle Sports Facility Construction Ltd, a renowned indigenous company led by infrastructure expert Ebi Egbe, widely respected for delivering top quality stadiums across Nigeria and Africa.
The scope of work covers every component of the facility, including the playing turf, drainage systems, seating areas, floodlights, and dressing rooms.
Officials have said the project is expected to be completed within eight months, ushering in a modern, safe, and spectator friendly stadium.
The Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara has emphasized the government’s commitment to promoting sports and creating an enabling environment for athletes, noting that investment in state of the art infrastructure is crucial for nurturing talent and attracting national and international events the State.
This move further reaffirms the Fubara – led administration’s dedication to sports development, youth engagement, and infrastructure renewal, signaling a broader vision for modernizing public facilities across the state.
Residents and sports enthusiasts have expressed optimism that the project will not only restore the stadium’s former glory but also serve as a hub for sporting excellence in the region.
