A Mandate For Minds

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has placed a clear responsibility before the newly inaugurated Governing Council of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka: protect the institution’s integrity and elevate its academic standing.
At the inauguration ceremony, the governor charged the new council members to serve with diligence, transparency and a deep sense of purpose, stressing that effective governance remains the backbone of any credible university system. According to him, the future relevance of DELSU depends not only on infrastructure and enrolment figures, but on principled leadership and sound policy direction.
The newly inaugurated members—Rt. Hon. Festus Agas, Rt. Hon. Frank Enekorogha and Mr. Charles Ajuyah, SAN—were described by the governor as men of proven integrity and public service experience, appointed at a time when the university is consolidating its position as one of Nigeria’s leading centres of higher learning.
Despite his tight schedule, Governor Oborevwori said the inauguration was a priority, noting that governing councils occupy a strategic place in university administration, shaping policies, providing oversight and safeguarding institutional vision.
“The Governing Council carries the aspirations of students, staff, alumni and the people of Delta State,” the governor said. “Your decisions will influence academic direction and define the future of this university for generations.”
He urged the council members to approach their assignment with a sense of history and responsibility, adding that their actions would have lasting impact on lives far beyond the campus. He expressed confidence that their collective experience would help DELSU continue to produce graduates who are academically sound, morally upright and socially responsible.
Speaking on behalf of the new council, Rt. Hon. Festus Agas described the appointment as both an honour and a call to service. He thanked the Delta State Government for the confidence reposed in them and assured the governor of the council’s commitment to working harmoniously with the Vice-Chancellor and university management.
Agas also commended Governor Oborevwori’s leadership style, particularly the cooperative relationship among the arms of government, which he said has contributed to measurable progress within two and a half years. He cited achievements in peace and security, infrastructure development, youth empowerment, human capital growth and healthcare, including major road projects and the strengthening of the state’s contributory health insurance scheme.
“We will serve with dedication, loyalty and integrity,” Agas pledged, while praying for continued wisdom and strength for the governor to steer Delta State to greater heights.
For DELSU, the message from Government House was unmistakable: governance matters, and the pursuit of academic excellence begins with those entrusted to lead.
